REMINDER: PENSIONERS URGED TO BE ALERT TO FUEL PAYMENT SCAMS*

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is warning pensioners to be on high alert for scams as the recovery of Winer Fuel Payments begins – read the full story on the Government website.

Almost two million people are expected to repay their winter fuel 2025 payment due to their annual income being more than £35,000 – for most, an automatic process.

HMRC saw more than 25,000 Winter Fuel Payment scam referrals over the last 12 months and is warning that scammers may now use the recovery process as a hook to use texts, emails, and phone calls to target this group.

For most, the payment will be recovered through a change to their PAYE tax code from the month (April 2026) with no need to contact HMRC. For those in Self Assessment who file online, the payment should be pre-populated in their 2025 to 2026 tax return, due by 31st January 2027. Customers should check and add it manually if it is not shown. Paper filers will need to add it on their tax return, due by 31st October 2026.

HMRC will never contact people by text or Email to ask them to repay their Winter Fuel Payment, or to request their bank details.

People can use HMRC’s online checking tool on the Government website to see whether their payment will be reclaimed and how.

Further information on HMRC’s recovery approach can be found on the Government website.

To report a suspicious text claiming to be from HMRC, forward it to 60599. To report a suspicious Email, forward to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk  To report a scam phone call, visit GOV.UK. If you have had any money stolen, contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud.

NK COMMUNITY LOTTERY

Applications are being welcomed to a grant fund which distributes funds raised through the North Kesteven Community Lottery.

Community and voluntary groups, charities and social enterprises with financial resources below £20,000, can apply for grants for up to £500 to support activities that benefit residents across the District.

The funding is designed to support smaller, volunteer led, nonprofit organisations deliver projects with North Kesteven.

This programme is funded by the proceeds from the NKDC Lottery, through which 60p from every £1 bought goes towards good causes. This is either 50p to a nominated good cause and 10p into a general good cause fund, or 60p directly into the general fund if no specific cause is chosen.

It is this general good cause fund that is now available for redistribution to eligible projects. Since the grant was launched, £26,350.09 has been allocated to 56 local good causes and projects for community benefit through this fund, bringing immense opportunity.

E-WASTE ACTION WEEK SEES HUNDREDS OF ITEMS DONATED*

E-Waste Action Week, which ended 23rd May, resulted in at least 1,372 items being donated for refurbishment or recycling. 303 phones, 82 laptops,87 tablets and more than 900 cables were counted in, the cables alone weighing more than 115g!

The final figures will likely be higher, with many cables being handed in bulk and not yet counted or weighed. There were nine community drop off points around the district, including parish councils, churches, and libraries, plus donation events at two repair cafes – in Sleaford and Bracebridge Heath. The repair cafes were run by Climate Action Network (SleafordCAN).

At the first event, a pop-up in Bracebridge Heath on Saturday 16th May, 41 items were brought in for repair, and 17 laptops, 6 tablets, 59 phones and 6.5 boxes full of cables were donated.

At Sleaford Repair Café, which is a bi-monthly event, 47 items were brought in for repair, and 49 phones, 12 laptops, 16 tablets and 35.5kg of cables were donated.

We can thank SleafordCAN, Sivill Service and all the donations’ points around the district for their support, without which the event would not be possible. Well done to all NKDC residents for taking the time to hunt out and donate their items.
