Public Meeting in Navenby

Thank you to the 200 people who attended our public meeting in Navenby where we considered the impact of 7,000 acres of solar industry in two nearby applications and the 30-50 acre “substation” which consists of 324 shipping containers of lithium battery 1km from a village.

A summary of the overwhelming objections was collated and sent to the Minister and Prime Minister, with a copy on its way to you from the Action Group.

Pivotal in the decision is a proposed application for the batteries and structures to transmit electricity to and from the grid. This is similar to the one at Bicker Fen near Boston, about the size of 12 football pitches. That connects power from the expanding offshore island turbine industry in Denmark into our grid.

The National Grid have confirmed their consultation: 3-7pm 27th September at the Venue, Navenby.

The paper to NKDC asking what has to be in their application is at “planning on line, North Kesteven 23/0390/EIASCO”. You can contact the action group via Barry Earnshaw barry.e@zen.co.uk and copy me in with comments, so I know your views.

Lost Village Festival

The Lost Village Festival welcomes 18,500 mainly 25-35 year olds over the August bank holiday.  As local District and County Councillors, Peter and I had an opportunity to checkout the preparations, including music, comedy, talks, hot tubs by the lake and food. They have their own security, wellbeing and medical teams on site, and it seemed very well organised. Working with NKDC to reduce the local impact, buses were laid on for  transport to and from the station. The stage had been moved round and tight monitoring of sound implemented to keep within renewed licence levels. A community liaison person and NKDC officers were on site and the sound levels were recorded.  Any comments, please contact me.

The event was started by four young men from William Farr School and caters mainly for 25-35yr olds. I am meeting with organisers next week about their £0.25m grant fund over 4 years for the most local communities. Our communities have already benefitted with good grants. I met local residents proud to be employed in building the imaginative stage sets and gaining skills. Half price local resident tickets were issued and there were nice opportunities for volunteers. 01522 719101 residents@lostvillagefestival.com

New Attraction on the River Slea

Some of the EU funds no longer going via the EU are being spent in our District, called the Shared Prosperity Fund or UKSPF. A brilliant use has been to support the Sleaford Navigation Trust in a new narrowboat for tourism and heritage, taking twelve people at a time under the lifting bridge to Cogglesford Watermill and back. Navigation House nearby, is a rare original canal company office. The canal was opened in 1794, enabling prosperity in Grantham. The Benjamin Handley was built nearby at Foston, near Grantham, and now moored at the Hub for fitting out by members of the Navigation Trust for 2025.

Steam Punk in Lincoln

Great inventiveness and colour brightened the heart of uphill Lincoln during the weekend events and parade, supporting our local economy too!

Village Events

Congratulations to all our organisers of great village events this summer. I enjoyed hooting to start the duck race to launch Beckingham’s excellent village event.

Beckingham

I was pleased to join in the fun, starting the Beckingham Fete and duck race with a hooter! Traditional and ever imaginative games and competitions kept people entertained while the BBQ and Caribbean Food followed. What a geat day, thanks all!

Run the Roads

Saturdays 9am from Robin Rose Bakes, Navenby 5km in roughly 40mins at your own pace, with a focus on community! All abilities and paces welcome! Or join the wellbeing walk from the Venue on Fridays 10am

Capturing the Blue Moon!

Did I share this vierw with you too?

Being so close, our moon was 15% bigger and a third brighter on August 23rd! (This is taken with my phone teetering over the telescope eyepiece!)

Europe and National Work

What is the impact of the new Government of our climate and energy policies and how will that affect us locally? I greatly enjoyed giving this talk this week at the expert group on climate and energy for CEMR, local government representing the whole of Europe. I also heard how Europe sees the future impacted by changes in the European elections this year. This week I spoke on civility in public life to new councilors at the national Local Government Association. I chair the steering group on improving civility who have produced support for councils.

Free Childcare

Free Childcare from nine months starts this week with 15 hours/week for eligible working parents. This is in addition to the 15 hours for 2 year olds and 30 hours for 3 and 4 year olds. It has to be renewed every 3 months. More here. Pre-schools will be working hard to expand and make more spaces available.

Our Councils have a duty to ensure every child has an appropriate education and many of you are also governors, helpers or give committee support, thank you.

New Government

There is a huge desire to do a lot while the going is good early on in their term. The King’s Speech set out a great many bills. The desire to build houses and renewable energy seems to be more about building industry than fitting into our carbon footprint, to avoid further damage. I write a weekly bulletin which you can find here. You can also keep in touch with social media. @overtonmarianne or facebook.

Best wishes,

Marianne
