Being prepared for a flood in your area

*Being Prepared for a Flood in your Area

Knowing just one action to take during a flood can reduce the effects on your home and family, and even save a life.

The quick actions below all take a moment but might really help you or someone you know in the event of a flood, or there's a full range of advice HERE

•   You can sign up for flood warnings by phone, text or email HERE to stay prepared. You can also see current flood warnings and alerts HERE.
•   You could also follow @EnvAgencyMids and @EnvAgency on Twitter and find us at @northkestevendc to stay informed.
•   A personal flood plan is downloadable from the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum website HERE.
•   You can think about what items you'd take with you in a flood - for example any medication, warm clothing, a torch, etc - and where you'd go.
•   You could decide which things you'd spend time moving, and how you'd turn off your gas and electricity in a hurry. Taking action before a flood could save your most valued things, minimise damage to your home, and save your life.

You can also visit the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum's webpage HERE.

There's also a handy GIF HERE which explains the different levels of flood warnings and what they mean.

For specific community emergency planning information the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum ‘one stop shop’ can be found HERE please feel free to use any of the wording from the site.

Flooding Guidance

When severe weather such as heavy rain is expected, North Kesteven District Council Officers work with our partners from the Environment Agency, Lincolnshire County Council, Police and  Fire and Rescue to ensure a coordinated and joined up response which provides the most effective use of available resources across the District and county.

During periods of heavy rain, residents may identify watercourses with unusually high levels.  Many of our watercourse levels are managed through a complex system of interlinked assets such as the internal drains which can be found throughout the county and discharge areas or floodplains which may be used to manage water levels many miles away.

Road and surface water discharge may also appear different as a result of agencies managing river and drain levels and this may result in slower than normal surface water run off.

Lincolnshire County Council is the Lead Local Flood Authority for the county and flooding should be reported either by –

phone 01522 782082 (24 hours)
Email during office hours HERE.

The following website will also give the option to report via a system called Fix My Street HERE.

It is important to report flooding so an understanding of the situation across the district can be gained and the most effective response provided to those who need it most however:

•   Sandbags are not provided as a precaution and should only be requested when there is an imminent high likelihood of flood water entering properties.
•   Sandbags are not provided by North Kesteven District Council but may be available from Lincolnshire County Council if reported through the channel above.
•   North Kesteven District Council provide support and resources to those agencies responding to flooding such as Lincolnshire County Council, police and fire and rescue.
•   North Kesteven District Council may provide additional resources through our repairs contractor to protect council assets occupied by our tenants.
•   Sandbags will not be provided to protect garages, gardens, or outbuildings.
•   Sandbags are not the most effective way to protect properties, there are other assets such as high-volume water pumps and booms which may be better suited to the conditions and these may be deployed when emergency services identify a need.
•   If life is at risk then 999 or 101 should be used to alert the emergency services
Information on pro-active measures homeowners can take to protect their property can be found HERE.

Alternatively, flooding can be reported through the Environment Agency’s national Floodline:

•   Telephone – 0345 988 1188
•   Textphone – 0345 602 6340

Floodline is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
